About the Village

Lamagaon, the village we support is high up in the foothills of Kathmandu Valley, Southern Nepal. With a vista out to the Himalayas and Mount Everest on a clear morning and the beautiful decorated Tibetan monasteries in Pharping below, it is truly a magical place!

Despite all its beauty, the villagers of Lamagaon and surrounding districts still lack many of the most basic amenities –  chimneys to draw carcinogenic smoke out of their houses and lungs, road access to towns with markets, hospitals and opportunities for young people, warm clothing for the extremely cold winters, and a diversity of nourishing food. Living in such a mountainous region means that most of the poorest in the area are subsistence farmers who can only grow a limited variety of crops on small pockets of land. Diets are often poor, and many of the older people suffer from alcoholism and depression.

Himalaya Anandit Shakti have achieved an awful lot since starting up there ten years ago, providing a variety of community-led development programs, including:

  • Chimney Installation
  • Provision of Clean Water
  • Bird’s Nest Children’s Home
  • Child Educational and Medical Sponsorship
  • Community Centre and Medical Centre
  • Village Rescue Team and Emergency Service
  • Vocational training
  • Lamagaon Youth Group
  • Lamagaon Women’s Group
  • Lamagaon Community Council
  • Rubbish Collection and Disposal Team
  • Warm winter blankets
  • Winter clothing

More information about these can be found here: Year Round Projects

There is still a huge amount of work to be done, to build on the success of ongoing projects in the village, particularly the Bird’s Nest Children’s Home and the new Montessori Preschool.
